Tameka R. Calicutt
Growing up in urban Chicago, I didn't always have the resources I needed to thrive, So I begin creating them. And hanging on to them for dear life. Because I knew that one day they would be the keys that delivered me from poverty. Coming from a single parent home, the issue wasn't always that the resources weren't there but my mother didn't have the time to connect me to the ones I needed to cultivate the various gifts growing on the inside of me. Between leveraging work, education, and a very necessary personal life to keep her mentally sane she did the best that she could. Introducing me to things like 401K, "Sewing positive seeds", and taking me to places outside of the gates of my community. We were poor, but she was wealthy in spirit. So she used that currency to give us the best life she knew how. Luckily, I went to a well developed Public school that gave me access to resources like, Tennis, The Arts, and Leadership opportunities that I will forever credit for the woman that I have become today. I had God parents, and neighbors, and my friends parents that poured into me and it really took a village.
Today, I want to pay it forward I want to be the answer to one of the worlds most complex issues. POVERTY!
I want to create a safe space where innovators can walk through the door and their dreams come to life! Where they don't have to waste away on the side line praying that one day they are the amongst the very few to make it out before the wraft of the "ghetto "suck them in. Like I was.
